Operating Requirements

    Permittees must comply with all laws, rules and specifications of DOT as well as the stipulations listed on the permit.

      Each permit expires one year after the date of issuance, unless revoked sooner by the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation. Applications for Canopy Permit renewal must be made at least one month prior to the permit expiration date.

        It is the building owner's responsibility to renew all canopy permits annually using the process steps identified above.

          Canopies cannot be installed within fifteen feet of fire hydrants or bus stop zones; beneath a fire escape; within the area created by extending the building line to the curb or within the area from ten feet of either side of the corner; within five feet or tree pit edges, four feet of street lights and utility hole or transformer vault covers or gratings, or three feet of parking meters.
