About

Health, Department of State
Businesses that provide certain residential care services need a Assisted Living Residence License. This license comes from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

The businesses that need this license provide services in a home-like setting. Businesses must have an adult home or enriched housing program license first. Businesses need this license to market themselves as "assisted living."

Businesses can apply to become an Enhanced Assisted Living Residence. This specification allows a business to serve people with particular medical needs.

Businesses can apply to become a Special Needs Assisted Living Residence. This specification allows a business to serve people with cognitive disabilities.

New laws are in effect to better govern assisted living facilities. Operators should review them as soon as possible.
