Asbestos Investigator Certification

Environmental Protection, Department of City
An asbestos investigator is an individual who is paid to engage in building surveys for asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and hazard assessments by sampling and testing ACM. The Asbestos Investigator Certification is issued to applicants who have asbestos experience and/or technical asbestos college training.

An individual may not engage in building surveys and hazard assessments for ACM unless that individual is certified as an asbestos investigator by New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Applicants must have successfully completed inspector training at the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

To qualify for an Asbestos Investigator Certification, an individual must have an “Inspector Certificate” issued by NYSDOL; and two years of documented working experience in building survey/hazard assessment for ACM and three years of other documented building survey related experience. In lieu of experience, an applicant may substitute technical college education and/or professional registration.

NYSDOL and DEP issue Asbestos Investigator Certifications and Inspector Certificates in the form of photo identification cards. The initial DEP certificate is valid for at least two years but not more than three years depending on the applicant’s birthday. The NYSDOL certificate is valid for one year only.
