The next bill before me, Introductory Number 610, sponsored by Council Member Perkins and eight of his colleagues, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Eugene McCabe Way" to Madison Avenue between East 118th Street and East 124th Street, in Manhattan.
Eugene Louis McCabe was born in New Haven, Connecticut on May 18, 1937. Upon finishing high school, he joined the United States Marines and later returned to Connecticut to attend Southern Connecticut State University.
In 1979, in recognition of the need for quality health care services for the Harlem community, Eugene McCabe founded North General Hospital. Today, North General Hospital is the only minority operated, voluntary, community, teaching hospital in New York State. Mr. McCabe strongly believed in public/private partnerships as evidenced by his spearheading the development of 300 units of affordable co-op housing along the once blighted Madison Avenue corridor from 119th to 124th Streets. Unfortunately, Eugene McCabe died on September 30, 1998.
In recognition of Mr. McCabe's many years of public service to New York State and New York City, it is fitting that Madison Avenue, between East 118th and East 124th Street, be renamed "Eugene McCabe Way."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
