MAYOR GIULIANI KICKS OFF CITY HARVEST AND DAILY NEWS' 16th ANNUAL CANNED FOOD DRIVE

As Holidays Approach, New Yorkers Unite To Fight Hunger Fire Houses And Police Stations To Serve As Drop-Off Points

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen and Police Commissioner Howard Safir today helped launch the 16th annual citywide Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Canned Food Drive by making canned food donations at the Duane Street Fire House in Lower Manhattan. The Daily News' Food Drive is part of City Harvest's "Harvest Season", which runs from October to January, during which City Harvest expects to collect more than two million pounds of food for the city's emergency food programs. The Daily News' Food Drive will collect non-perishables from November 17, 1999 to January 15, 2000.

Also joining Mayor Giuliani were City Harvest Executive Director Julia Erickson; representatives from the Girls Scouts; WCBS-FM; and Modell's Sporting Goods, all sponsors of this year's food drive.

"As the holidays approach, New Yorkers always keep in mind those less fortunate," Mayor Giuliani said. "The Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Food Drive has been part of the effort to alleviate hunger for 16 years and their contribution is part the generous spirit that makes New York City special. I urge all New Yorkers to join City Harvest, the Daily News, and the thousands of volunteers who help bring hope to New Yorkers in need. All you need to do to contribute is visit your local police precinct or firehouse and make your donation.

"I want to thank City Harvest for their year-round commitment to make a difference in the lives of fellow New Yorkers. And I would also like to thank the food drive sponsors for supporting this vital effort," the Mayor added.

Last year, the Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Canned Food Drive collected 40,000 pounds of canned goods for shelters, food pantries and soup kitchens in the five boroughs.

New York City Police Stations and Firehouses, as well as many churches, synagogues, schools, entertainment venues and workplaces will open their doors as City Harvest collection sites in every community. The lobby of the Daily News, WCBS-FM and all Modell's Sporting Goods stores in New York City will also serve as drop-off points.

City Harvest delivers an average of 25,000 pounds of food daily which helps to feed over 60,000 people every week.

The Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Canned Food Drive is sponsored by City Harvest, the Daily News, the New York City Police Department, the New York City Fire Department, Modell's Sporting Goods, WCBS-FM, and the Girl Scouts Council of Greater New York Inc.
