The next bill before me, Introductory Number 476, sponsored by Council Members Freed, Abel and O'Donovan, would name the Peck Slip portion of the East River Bikeway/Walkway, in Manhattan as "Jerry Driscoll Walk".
Jerimiah Driscoll, who was nicknamed Jerry, was born in 1909 in Ireland. At age 19, he immigrated to New York and began his career working on our waterways, where he worked as a deck hand. For over 60 years he piloted tour boats, fishing boats, commuter boats, tug boats and fuel delivery boats along the City's waterways. In 1945, he became a founding partner of the Sightseeing Yachts Circle Line.
Throughout his long career, he was regarded as a man of fierce integrity who was dedicated to the fair and open use of New York Harbor's waterfront.
Jerry Driscoll passed away in 1994.
In view of the contributions Jerry Driscoll made to the waterfront, it is fitting that the Peck Slip portion of the East River Bikeway/Walkway be named "Jerry Driscoll Walk".
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
