Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani proclaimed May Asian Pacific Heritage Month in New York City during a reception at Gracie Mansion this evening. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Edward Seto, President of the Asian American Coalition of Staten Island. James Chin, Chairman and Commissioner of the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals, served as Master of Ceremonies.
"The contributions of Asian Pacific New Yorkers to the culture of our City can be felt in every borough and every neighborhood, said Mayor Giuliani. "From the boardrooms to the classroom, from the halls of science and medicine to Silicon Alley and the corner store, the story of the Asian-Pacific immigrants in America and their descendents is the classic American story, as well as the classic New York story. It is a story of hard work, of faith, family, and belief in the importance of making sacrifices for future generations, and I'm honored to proclaim May Asian Pacific Heritage Month in New York City."
The month-long celebration, designed to promote cooperation and understanding among Asian Pacific Americans, advocates the interests of Asian Pacific Americans throughout the City. It provides a conducive environment for Asian Pacific Americans to utilize their history, culture and art to foster self-esteem and respect for their heritage.
