Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen today visited Principal Sister Marguerite Torre and the children of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary School in Queens for a Thanksgiving celebration and a special unveiling of the 1998 World Series Trophy.
"Under the leadership of Joe Torre, the 1998 Yankees showed us how much we can accomplish if we work together," Mayor Giuliani said. "Under the leadership of Sister Margurite Torre, these students are working together towards achieving an education and becoming better New Yorkers. We can be proud of both, and it is with great pleasure that I bring the New York Yankees World Series Trophy to the students of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary School. Let it be an inspiration and a reminder to our students about what can accomplish."
After speaking to two student assemblies at the school, the Mayor helped Sister Marguerite unveil the 1998 World Series Trophy for the students to view for the day. Both the 1996 and the 1998 Yankee Trophies are on display as part of the 1998 Yankee Exhibit in the Tweed Courthouse at 52 Chambers Street between Broadway and Centre Streets in Manhattan. The exhibit is open to all New Yorkers seven days a week between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary School is an elementary school for grades Pre-Kindergarten to the eighth grade.
