MAYOR GIULIANI VISITS PUBLIC SCHOOL 56 IN STATEN ISLAND

First School to Open in Staten Island in 17 Years

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Borough President Guy Miolinari and School Principal Alice Singletary to visit Public School 56 in Staten Island, the first school to open in that borough in 17 years. After a tour of the new high technology facility, the Mayor read to third and forth grade students.

"This school is a wonderful achievement for the education system, for the children who will benefit from it, and for Staten Island," the Mayor said. "Public School 56 will not only provide the cutting edge education that our children need to be successful, it will also allow us to improve the system as a whole, and to pave the way for the schools of the future."

Public School 56 is the first school wired with fiber optics in New York City. Every classroom is prepared to be part of a local area network system that keeps the students connected through new technology and advance computer education.

The school will also help to ease the overcrowding of the Staten Island South Shore, providing students with more comfortable facilities. The 900-seat school was built on a fast track and finished ahead of schedule in 22 months.
