Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today thanked George Steinbrenner and the Yankee Foundation for contributing $200,000 to assist the victims of Hurricane Georges, which devastated parts of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. At a press conference at the 33rd Police Precinct in Washington Heights George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the Yankees, presented two checks in the amount of $100,000 each to Mayor Giuliani and Police Commissioner Safir as contributions for reconstruction projects in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
One check will go to the reconstruction of a senior citizen care center -- Centro de Cuidado Diurno para Ciudadanos de Mayor Edad -- in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. The second check will go to the reconstruction of a hospital -- Hospital Regional George -- in San Pedro de Macors, Dominican Republic.
"On behalf of the City of New York, I want to thank George Steinbrenner and his Yankees Foundation for assisting in the recovery from the devastation left behind by hurricane Georges in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico," Mayor Giuliani said. "Your generosity will bring hope and much needed resources to thousands of families affected by one of the worst hurricanes to ever strike the Caribbean."
