MAYOR GIULIANI HOSTS PROCLAMATION CEREMONY FOR THE NATIONAL CHILD HEALTH DAY

The American Health Foundation Announces Whoopi Goldberg As Its Goodwill Ambassador And Spokesperson

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed Monday, October 5, 1998 as National Child Health Day in New York City. Originally proclaimed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1928, The National Child Health Day has been sponsored by the American Health Foundation (AHF) and its corporate partners since 1992 to promote good health. At the Gracie Mansion ceremony, AHF announced actress Whoopi Goldberg as its Goodwill Ambassador and Spokesperson for Health Education Initiatives.

Also in attendance were AHF President and Founder Dr. Ernst L. Wynder and children who participate in the Foundation's health education program KNOW YOUR BODY. This educational program, which teaches healthy practices to children and their families, is in place in more than 40 states and at various New York City elementary schools.

"Since President Calvin Coolidge originally proclaimed the National Child Health Day seventy years ago, we have made incredible advances in science and medicine, beyond what anyone could have ever imagined," Mayor Giuliani said. "But as far as we have come, each year the health report card issued by the American Health Foundation remind us that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to ensure the health and well-being of our children. National Child Health Day gives parents, children and society as a whole, the chance to take time out and reflect on ways we can accomplish this.

"I'd like to thank the American Health Foundation, its corporate partners Allstate, Kellogg Company and Sunny Delight in teaming up on National Child Health Day. I also want to congratulate Whoopi Goldberg on being named Goodwill Ambassador and Spokesperson for the American Health Foundation. I applaud her efforts to educate children about health issues in a fun and entertaining way."

The NHF is devoted to chronic disease prevention. In addition to education and nutritional programs for children, it conducts a wide range of basic and clinical research initiatives.
