MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME
"MARJORIE RICHARDSON STREET" NEAR CYPRESS
HILL HOUSES IN BROOKLYN
--Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-
The next bill before me is Introductory Number 99-A, sponsored by Council Members Wooten and Abel. This legislation would add, on Fountain Avenue between Sutter Avenue and Linden Boulevard in Brooklyn, the name "Marjorie Richardson Street".
Marjorie Richardson was born on March 29, 1935 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. After completing her education, she relocated to Brooklyn, New York in 1959, where she met and married Elliott Richardson.
Mrs. Richardson and her husband, along with their two sons, Michael and Elliott Jr., moved into the Cypress Hills Houses in 1961, where she became a volunteer worker with the tenant association advisory board. Through her involvement, she recognized the vital need for youth participation in community activities. To accomplish this objective, she drafted proposals and received funding to establish a Youth Patrol. In October of 1981, Marjorie Richardson was named Director of the Youth Patrol that she was instrumental in creating. As part of this program, she also developed other after-school activities for children in the community.
In addition, Mrs. Richardson further served her community as an Inspector for the Board of Elections and as a member of Community Board 5 and the 75th Precinct Council, among many other community organizations. She received numerous awards for her service to the community.
In recognition of the many years of leadership and commitment that Mrs. Richardson gave to her community, it is very appropriate that Fountain Avenue, between Sutter Avenue and Linden Boulevard, adjacent to the Cypress Hills Houses Project, be called "Marjorie Richardson Street."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
