Mayors and their police chiefs from across New York State today joined Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in calling for a coordinated effort in reducing crime statewide. First among the issues of concern is an end of parole for violent felons. Today's announcement came on the last day of the New York City Crime Strategies Conference a two-day conference discussing measures of combating crime.
"This week, New York City lost an exceptional police officer and father, Anthony Mosomillo," Mayor Giuliani said. "This is a tragedy that never should have occured. New York State should join the 27 other states and United States government, who have abolished parole. This is a problem that not only plagues New York City but municipalities throughout the State. I thank the assembled Mayors and county leaders from across the state for their support on this important measure. We must end parole now, so that we can protect the rights of innocent victims and to administer criminals the punishment they deserve."
