MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES THE 11th ANNUAL FLEET WEEK PARADE OF SHIPS
-- Week-Long Event To Pay Special Tribute To Women In The Military --
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined in a celebration aboard the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum to honor America's Armed Forces at Fleet Week '98 Parade Of Ships.
" I always look forward to Fleet Week because it gives the people of our City the opportunity to show the men and women of our Armed Forces how much we appreciate their commitment to the time honored principles of courage, duty, and sacrifice -- which are the core values of America's Armed Forces," said Mayor Giuliani. "This year we pay special tribute to the women who have served in our country's Armed Forces since the founding of our nation. These women have served with distinction and courage, and many have given their lives for their country.
"New York City is very proud to be host to all five branches of the Armed Forces and representatives from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands during this week-long celebration," the Mayor continued. "On behalf of all New Yorkers I want to thank the men and women who now serve, and those who have served, in our country's Armed Forces for their hard work and untiring effort to protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans," the Mayor concluded.
The arrival of the fleet launches an entire week of events sponsored by the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Led by the Coast Guard Tall Ship Eagle, an armada of 11 United States carrier ships, including the Navy's aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, was joined by Coast Guard vessels and ships from the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands. More than 10,000 servicemen and women from the United States military joined in the Fleet Week '98 ceremonies.
Mayor Giuliani paid tribute to five servicewomen from our country's Armed Forces and presented them with the Intrepid Leadership Award on behalf of all the women who have served America with honor, pride and distinction:
- Rear Admiral Joyce Johnson, Director of Health and Safety, United States Coast Guard,
- Major General Susan Pamerleau, Director, Military Personnel, United States Air Force,
- Lieutenant General Claudia Kennedy, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, United States Army,
- Lieutenant General Carol Mutter, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, United States Marine Corps.,
- Vice Admiral Patricia Ann Tracey, Director of Naval Training and Chief of Naval Education and Training, United States Navy .
Mayor Giuliani was joined at today's ceremony by Master of Ceremonies Walter Cronkite, Chairman of Fleet Week '98 Parade Of Ships Howard Lutnick, Founder and Chairman of the Intrepid Museum Zachary Fisher, Secretary of the Navy John Dalton, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Defense John Hamre, and William White, Chief Operating Officer of the Intrepid Museum Foundation.
