STATEMENT BY MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI

This past Saturday I stated publicly that I felt that enough had been said about the Crown Heights riots of 1991 and the recent settlement. I again made that same statement on both Sunday and Monday. The Crown Heights riot was a very tragic incident that is now part of our history of which there has been an ample public airing of everyone's views. My views, David Dinkins' views, as well as the findings and conclusions set forth in [Governor Cuomo's commissioned] Girgenti Report of July 20, 1993, are a matter of public record and are well known. The people of the City can make their own conclusions regarding this tragic event.

As for Mayor David Dinkins' dinner invitation, I accept the spirit in which it was made. In the same spirit, it is my sincere belief that such a meeting will only prolong the discussion and debate of the tragic incident that should be laid to rest. Although I do not question the motivation of such an invitation, I do believe that such a meeting would only serve as a major press event or media circus rather than aiding in the healing.

I am pleased that former Mayor David Dinkins and I agree that in the spirit of conciliation, it is best to lay this matter to rest. As further discussion would serve no useful purpose, I respectfully decline Mayor Dinkins' invitation.
