MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH WITH "THE NEW YORK LIBERTY" TEAM MEMBERS

Unveils photo exhibit of basketball team's inaugural season

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined members of New York's professional women's basketball team, The New York Liberty, to honor Women's History Month and the accomplishments of the popular New York team with a photo exhibit.

The Mayor was joined at the event by The New York Liberty's guard, Teresa Weatherspoon; the Vice President and Manager of The New York Liberty, Carol Blazejowski; the Chair of the NYC Commission on the Status of Women, Amalia Betanzos, and representatives of Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks.

"In honoring Women's History, we are not only honoring the history made by our mothers and grandmothers, but also the history that is being made every day by the women in our lives, our wives, daughters, and certainly the women in this room," said the Mayor. "In the historic first year of the WNBA, the sheer will, determination and talent of the incredible women of The New York Liberty, galvanized the spirit of the entire City," the Mayor added. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to recognize the essential and invaluable women who built, shaped and developed the history of this nation."

Women's History Month is celebrated each March to acknowledge the vital and continuous contributions to history of women of all ages, races and cultures. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Women's Rights Movement. To celebrate it, the New York City Commission on the Status of Women has prepared a photographic exhibit entitled "Living the Legacy". The exhibit highlights the pioneering effort of The New York Liberty, which proudly and successfully represented New York in the WNBA's inaugural season last year.

The New York Liberty is one of the eight charter teams of the WNBA, a league that continues expanding, attracting enthusiastic fans, and giving professional sport opportunities to hundreds of women.

The exhibit will be open to the public at the Tweed Gallery, 52 Chambers Street, Manhattan, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm, through March 31st.
