MAYOR GIULIANI JOINS FLUTIST JAMES GALWAY AND MUSICIAN PHIL COULTER TO LAUNCH 'FLUTEWISE' MUSIC PROGRAM IN NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS

50 Student Flutists At LaGuardia HS Provide Pre-St. Patrick's Day Concert

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined internationally acclaimed flutist James Galway, his wife Jeanne, Irish recording artist Phil Coulter and music students at La Guardia High School to help launch "Flutewise", a non-profit organization which raises funds, provides instruments and instruction to young people.

As part of the launch, James Galway conducted a master class for 50 student flutists at LaGuardia and then joined his wife Jeanne, Phil Coulter and the students in a short pre-St. Patrick's Day concert. He also presented a flute to Mayor Giuliani and LaGuardia High School principal Paul Saranson for use in the school's music programs.

"Because we have restored arts as a part of our public school curriculum, we are delighted to welcome James and Jeanne Galway, Phil Coulter and the Flutewise program to New York City," Mayor Giuliani said. "For a decade, Flutewise has been reaching out and bringing music to young people throughout the world. By raising money for children's music education programs, donating instruments, holding master classes and sparking the interest of students with the Flutewise newsletter, they have brought the joy of music into millions of lives. Now they are bringing this gift to the children of the United States. And they could not have picked a better time, because on the eve of St. Patrick's Day, we cannot think of a better sound than the celtic music made by James and Jeanne Galway, Phil Coulter and these music students at LaGuardia."

James Galway said, "It's a real honor for us to be here this morning in this great high school to introduce the Fluteswise program to the United States. We'll be expanding the program in New York City where Mayor Giuliani has reintroduced arts and music programs as a permanent part of the public school curriculum. We're here to support that commitment and we'll be coming back again and also arranging for other artists to visit the schools and work with music students."

Also on hand for the event was Sharon Dunn, Special Assistant to Chancellor Crew for the Arts in the New York City public school system.

James Galway and Phil Counter are currently performing together on a three-city concert tour which culminates with a St. Patrick's Night concert at Carnegie Hall tomorrow night at 8 PM. Both natives of Northern Ireland, Galway and Coulter will team up again in May for "Northern Lights", a special concert that will celebrate the achievements and contributions -- in music, the spoken word and dance -- of the people of Northern Ireland.
