MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT BETWEEN NEW YORK CITY AND THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE TO ASSIST STATEN ISLAND RESIDENTS
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Commissioner of the Department of Citywide Services William J. Diamond today announced that the City of New York has signed an agreement with the Internal Revenue Service for space in Staten Island Borough Hall that will enable the IRS to provide taxpayer assistance to residents of Staten Island more conveniently.
Last year IRS facilities serving the borough were closed, and Staten Islanders would have been required to travel to Brooklyn for assistance services this tax season. Through the intervention of local elected officials, including Borough President Guy V. Molinari and United States Congressman Vito J. Fosella, the IRS contacted the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) in February to find office space quickly.
"This agreement between New York City and the Internal Revenue Service will give Staten Islanders basic assistance in filing their federal income tax return without having to leave their Borough," said Mayor Giuliani. "I commend Borough President Molinari, Congressman Fosella, and DCAS Commissioner Diamond for their prompt intervention on behalf of Staten Island's taxpayers."
Department of Citywide Services Commissioner Diamond said, "As the filing deadline for income taxes approaches, I am pleased that DCAS was able to help site an IRS taxpayer assistance office within the Borough. I am sure it is a relief for Staten Islanders to know they can get answers to their questions and assistance at the new IRS office conveniently located in Borough Hall."
The IRS will have the new office open in time to handle taxpayer requests for forms and assistance with 1997 tax filing. The Division of Real Estate Services of DCAS signed a one year license agreement with the IRS for the 322 square foot office at $245.00 per month. The Staten Island IRS taxpayer assistance office will now be located in Borough Hall, Room 17, on the ground floor.
