MAYOR GIULIANI SUPPORTS NEW ANTI-GUN VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN; PROCLAIMS TODAY "PAX DAY" IN NEW YORK CITY

New Campaign Launched On Anniversary Of Empire State Building Shootings

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today helped launch a new nationwide anti-gun violence campaign called PAX by proclaiming today "PAX Day" in New York City. The new campaign is being launched on the first anniversary of the tragic shootings on the observation deck of the Empire State Building. The Mayor was unable to attend PAX's national kick-off because he was delivering remarks today at the New York State Conference of Mayors Winter Luncheon in Albany.

"February 23rd, 1997 is a night indelibly imprinted in the minds of all New Yorkers," Mayor Giuliani said. A lone gunman armed with an automatic pistol opened fire without warning on unsuspecting tourists on the observation deck of the Empire State Building. This random act of violence shook New York City to the core, shattering the lives of innocent victims, their families and friends.

"As we mark the one year anniversary of this tragedy, we celebrate the creation of PAX, a united movement against gun violence," the Mayor continued. "Under the leadership of Executive Director Daniel Gross, whose younger brother Matthew was seriously injured in the attack and Co-Executive Director Talmage Cooley, PAX is dedicated to the vision of a society free of gun violence.

"Through an innovative and aggressive strategy incorporating media, advertising, technology, the arts, politics, government, legislation and business, PAX is guided in its mission by determination, creativity, inclusiveness and honesty. PAX seeks to rise above partisan politics to serve as a unifying force in the anti-gun violence movement. As PAX launches its national kick-off today all New Yorkers join together to support this noble effort," the Mayor concluded.
