MAYOR GIULIANI MEETS WITH WINNIE THE POOH AND ASSURES HIM THAT HE IS
SAFE AND SOUND IN NEW YORK CITY
Mayor Also Meets With Tigger, Kanga, Piglet and Eeyore
And Warns British Not To Interfere With Legal Immigrants
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today met with Winnie The Pooh and four of his associates in the Children's Room of the New York Public Library's Donnell Branch in Manhattan and assured them that no foreign government would remove them from New York City, where they have resided since 1987.
"Like millions of other immigrants, Winnie The Pooh and his friends --
Tigger, Kanga, Piglet and Eeyore - came to America and to New York to build a better life for themselves and they want to remain here in the Capital of the World," Mayor Giuliani said. " Every year, they have delighted tens of thousands of children and adults from all over the world, who come to visit them at the Donnell Library. I wanted to visit them today and assure them that New York City will continue to be their home as long as they want to remain here. I told Winnie The Pooh that he should not be bothered by all the media accounts about the British parliamentarian who is demanding Pooh's return to Britain."
In a private, off-the record conversation with Mayor Giuliani, Winnie The Pooh said, "Oh bother, Mayor. I want everyone in Britain and America to know that we're very, very happy here in New York City. Of course, we love our native Britain and have fond memories of having grown up there. But every year in New York City, three quarters of a million people come and visit us, including many British tourists. We live here in comfort and feel very safe, especially since crime has dropped so much. We love New York. It's the Capital of the World."
During his visit, the Mayor was accompanied by Paul LeClerc, President of the New York Public Library.
