MAYOR GIULIANI: NBA ALL-STAR GAME WILL BE ECONOMIC "SLAM DUNK" FOR NEW YORK CITY

All-Star Game And Events Expected To Generate $52.4 Million In Economic Activity For New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani announced today that the 48th Annual NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, February 8, and other planned All-Star events will generate approximately $52.4 million in economic activity for New York City and produce approximately $2.7 million in City tax revenues.

The Mayor was joined by James Dolan, Chief Executive Officer of Cablevision Systems Corporation; Dave Checketts, President and Chief Executive Officer of Madison Square Garden; and Charles Millard, President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation at today's City Hall press conference.

"This really is a slam dunk for New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "For the first time in 30 years, the NBA All-Star Game, showcasing some of the world's greatest athletes, will be held at New York City's legendary Madison Square Garden before thousands of enthusiastic fans. The City will receive an economic boost of $52.4 million as a result of the game and related events, which include the NBA All-Star Weekend Jam Session at the Javits Center and All-Star Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. In addition, the All-Star game will be broadcast in more than 190 countries worldwide, allowing millions of people to experience first-hand what a world-class sports center the City is."

It is estimated that NBA expenditures alone for the All-Star Weekend will generate $18 million in direct and indirect economic activity. Seventy-five thousand people are expected to participate in the weekend's activities, including more than 30,000 out-of-town visitors, and more than 500 members of the press corps. The visitors' direct spending and its "ripple effect" will generate $34.4 million in economic activity.

The 48th annual All-Star Game, which will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, in Madison Square Garden, is making its first appearance in New York City since 1968. Other NBA All-Star Weekend events include "All-Star Saturday Night," Saturday, February 7, at Madison Square Garden, and the "Jam Session," Thursday, February 5, through Sunday, February 8, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The NBA All-Star Game will be broadcast on NBC, CTV in Canada, the NBA on ESPN Radio, on the Internet at the NBA and ESPN SportZone websites, and in more than 190 countries around the world.

"The return of the NBA All-Star Game signifies, yet again, how New York City has bounced back under Mayor Giuliani's leadership," said Charles Millard, President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. "Crime has dropped, and New York City is now the safest large City in America. Our streets are cleaner, and we are continuing to create jobs at an unprecedented rate. Events like the NBA All-Star Game will continue to showcase New York City to the world."
