MAYOR GIULIANI NAMES KENNETH J. PODZIBA TO HEAD THE NEW YORK CITY SPORTS COMMISSION

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today appointed Kenneth J. Podziba as Commissioner of the New York City Sports Commission, replacing Arlene Weltman, the agency's former Executive Director. Mr. Podziba currently serves as the Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. Today's appointment is effective February 2, 1998.

"Today, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Podziba as the Commissioner of the New York City Sports Commission," Mayor Giuliani said. "Ken has been a dedicated public servant, working in a variety of capacities that have served New Yorkers well. As a Deputy and Assistant Commissioner, Ken's efforts helped to streamline many City agencies, helping to reduce costs. I know that Ken will work tirelessly on behalf of the New York's sports community and it is an honor to name him Commissioner of the Sports Commission."

Mr. Podziba said, "Under the leadership of Mayor Giuliani, New York City is a better place to live, work and visit. I would like to thank the Mayor for this outstanding opportunity to expand the City's position in the sporting industry. Let's continue to build on this foundation and make New York the Capital of the Sports World."

As Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, Mr. Podziba was responsible for overseeing revenue and administrative services functions. Prior to joining the Taxi and Limousine Commission, he served as Assistant Commissioner for Fiscal Operations with the New York City Community Development Agency, from 1994 to 1996, where he managed the agency's contracting process. As a Project Manager for the New York City Economic Development Corporation from 1992 to 1994, he planned and implemented development projects in Manhattan. From 1988 to 1990, Mr. Podziba was an Urban Planner and Project Manager for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development including Brooklyn's MetroTech urban renewal project. Mr. Podziba earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Marketing and Advertising from Syracuse University in 1986 and graduated from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation in 1991.

The New York City Sports Commission, founded in 1986 and currently chaired by Mitchell Modell, sponsors a variety of amateur athletic events in the five boroughs. The Commission's signature events are the Mayor's Cup Tournaments, held in basketball, softball and soccer.
