MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS THE ART COMMISSION AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and New York City Art Commission President Dr. Reba White Williams today presented the Sixteenth Annual Art Commission Awards for Excellence in Design at a City Hall ceremony. Also in attendance were City agency heads, artists, architects, designers and conservators. Each year members of the Commission review hundreds of designs for art, architecture, street furniture, and landscape architecture to be located on City-owned property.

"By raising the standards in all areas of public design, the Awards for Excellence in Design are evidence of the Art Commission’s critical role in our efforts to improve New York City’s quality of life," said Mayor Giuliani. "From the installation of a beautiful ornamental gate at Public School 33 in Manhattan to the construction of an Emergency Medical Service garage and office at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, the Art Commission lives up to the highest caliber of design that New Yorkers expect and deserve."

Dr. Williams said, "The composition of the Commission reflects its roots in the beaux-arts training and institutions that dominated turn of the century New York. However, the century-old urge to transform the capital of commerce into the City Beautiful has been revitalized under Mayor Giuliani’s Administration. This Mayor recognizes the importance of the arts to all New Yorkers."

The Art Commission of the City of New York was established in 1898, and is the City’s design review agency. The Commission recognizes those artists, architects, designers and City Agencies who have exceeded its high standards for quality in public works.
