MAYOR GIULIANI OBSERVES GROUNDHOG DAY IN CITY HALL PARK

City’s ‘Groundhog’ Is Mighty King Tusk, 14,000 Pound Elephant

Will Look For Shadow Of Ponderous Pachyderm

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani this morning was joined by New York City schoolchildren, Clowns and the Ringmaster from Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Parks Commissioner Henry Stern in City Hall Park for an entirely different celebration of Groundhog Day. The City’s groundhog was portrayed by Mighty King Tusk, a 14,762-pound Asian elephant with seven-foot tusks that is described by Circus officials as the largest land mammal on earth.

"Since this is the Capital of the World, we simply don’t use a groundhog to determine how much longer Winter will last, we call upon Mighty King Tusk -- the world’s largest elephant. With all due respect to the King’s esteemed New York City colleagues -- Staten Island Chuck, Flushing Phil and Corona Kate -- bigger is better," Mayor Giuliani told the gathering.

After conferring with Ringmaster Kiser and Ringling Brothers/Barnum and Bailey Circus Clowns, the Mayor declared, "The elephant has seen his shadow, so New Yorkers are in for six more weeks of Winter. But let’s face it, who could complain about six more weeks of weather like today’s!

"When his prognosticating days are over, Mighty King Tusk has big ambitions -- I think he may be suited to run for Mayor of New York City. And he’s well equipped to do that, because to run for Mayor, you have to have a very thick skin," the Mayor joked.

Mighty King Tusk and Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus - The Greatest Show On Earth - will appear in the New York - New Jersey area from March 10th through April 13th this year. The Circus will donate 1,000 tickets to New York City schoolchildren.
