MAYOR GIULIANI BREAKS GROUND FOR THE RAMAZ MIDDLE SCHOOL
Proclaims "Ramaz School Day" in New York City
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined the members of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Ramaz School in a ground-breaking ceremony marking the construction of the new middle school building. The seven-story structure, located on East 85th Street in Manhattan, will provide education for over 250 additional students.
"I am delighted to be part of this celebration as this important learning institution moves forward," Mayor Giuliani said. "For sixty years, the Ramaz School has nurtured young people with a Jewish education, teaching generations of New Yorkers tradition and values as well as general studies.
"I am confident that the new Ramaz Middle School will continue its unwavering commitment to educating the young people of our City. I congratulate the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, parents and students for their commitment and vision," concluded Mayor Giuliani.
The new building, named in honor of Esther Gottesman and in memory of Benjamin Gottesman, is expected to open in the Fall of 1999. It will include a full gymnasium and locker room, music room, science laboratories, computer rooms library and student and faculty lounges.
Ramaz Middle School originally opened on 85th Street in 1937 with 15 students and three faculty members. It was among the first orthodox Jewish day schools to offer a curriculum comparable to high schools and was named for the congregation's late Rabbi Moses Zevulu Margolies, "the Ramaz." The school currently has 1,000 students and a staff of nearly 200. The students will not only have a new facility in which to learn, they will also have a new program of study which is currently being formulated in order to maximize their educational experience.
