MAYOR GIULIANI ADDRESSES 14TH ANNUAL MAYORAL CONFERENCE ON ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Commends the Department for the Aging for Convening the Largest Conference on Alzheimer's Disease in the Nation

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today addressed the 14th Annual Mayoral Conference on Alzheimer's Disease at the New York Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. Hosted by the New York City Department for the Aging, more than 1,000 family caregivers and professionals attended the conference where Linda Dano, star of NBC's "Another World," and her mother, Evelyn Widermuth, were the recipients of the Dr. Charles Mann, Jr. Care Giving Award.

"I commend the Department for the Aging for convening these important all-day symposiums each year as part of the services of its Alzheimer's Center and Long Term Care Services Unit, " Mayor Giuliani said. "As the first municipal program of its kind in the nation, it has been tremendously successful in reaching out to New York City's 160,000 Alzheimer's patients as well as their families and caregivers.

"Our network has grown over the years as visibility of Alzheimer's has increased and more New Yorkers have begun to learn to live with this disease. We're proud that we have made sure that elderly New Yorkers continue to receive both the highest quality treatment and the most sensitive care."

Herbert W. Stupp, Commissioner of the New York City Department for the Aging, which administers the Alzheimer's Center and Long Term Care Services Unit and conducted today's symposium, said, "No matter how far we've come over the years, the overwhelming burden of caregiving still lies with the family. That's why it's important to know that Alzheimer's services have more than doubled here in New York City in the past 15 years, helping these familles in a great many ways."

The Annual Mayoral Conference, the largest conference on Alzheimer's Disease in the nation, is an all-day symposium designed to examine the critical issues confronting family and professional caregivers who carry the burden of care. Workshop topics included: Alzheimer's Patients: Enriching Their Lives, Legal and Financial Management, Managing Difficult Behaviors at Home, Family Therapy and Stress Management and Assisted Living for Alzheimer's.

Supporters of the 14th Annual Mayoral Conference on Alzheimer's Disease included the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the Mann Family Foundation, Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, Staten Island Hospital and the New York City Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, which also helped in the planning of the conference.
