MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT REGARDING THE PENDING AMTRAK STRIKE:

"I want to thank Senator D'Amato for spearheading the negotiations between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Amtrak officials in an effort to diminish the negative effects that the pending Amtrak strike could have on commuters traveling to New York City.

"The agreement announced today by Senator D'Amato will limit disruptions for the thousands of commuters who use the Long Island Railroad and New Jersey Transit to travel into New York City each day. I also want to thank Deputy Mayor Randy Levine who sat with Senator D'Amato during the discussions, the Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit and Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials for their efforts in significantly reducing the problems normally associated with a strike of this magnitude."
