MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES NEW YORK CITY EMPLOYMENT NUMBERS CONTINUE TO GROW FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE MONTH
City Continues To Experience Largest Job Growth In 13 Years
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that for the third consecutive month New York City has experienced continued growth in job creation and continued decrease in unemployment. The Mayor made the announcement at Interstate Brands Corporation located on Douglas Avenue in Jamaica, Queens -- a company with which the City signed a retention deal in January 1997.
"This past January we convinced Interstate Brands Corporation to remain in Queens and to abandon their plans to move their bakery plant to New Jersey," said Mayor Giuliani. "We secured over 320 jobs and Interstate Brands has since created an additional 100 jobs and invested $10 million into the site. While it's true that this deal did not involve thousands of jobs and garner headlines, it is of vast importance to this local Queens community and to the overall economic health of the City. Our retention deals with small and medium-sized companies are just as important, if not more important, to the economy of the City and to those New Yorker whose jobs are on the line.
"And I am proud to announce today, for the third month in a row we have seen our unemployment numbers decrease -- a decrease from 9.5 percent in August to 9.3 percent in September, when seasonally adjusted -- and an increase in new private sector jobs -- over 10,000 during this last period. For the first nine months through September, total City employment is up 45,800 jobs on average -- compared to 32,700 during the same period last year. What is most important is resident employment is up by 15,300 jobs from last month -- the biggest gain since 1989 -- this means more jobs for New Yorkers. Since 1994 our Administration has created over 173,500 private sector jobs -- compared to the loss of over 320,000 jobs in the prior administration," the Mayor concluded.
