MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES THE RENOVATION OF STATEN ISLAND'S MT. LORETTO SENIOR CENTER
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today was joined by Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari and other elected officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Mt. Loretto Friendship Club--a recently renovated senior citizens center on Hyland Boulevard in Staten Island.
Also joining the Mayor during the ceremony were Council Members Vito Fossella and John Fusco, New York City Department for the Aging Commissioner Herbert Stupp and Mt. Loretto Senior Center Executive Director Steve Rynn.
"Thanks to the commitment of Borough President Molinari and Councilman Fossella, we have been able to consolidate two older senior centers into this up-to-date, beautiful new facility," Mayor Giuliani said. "Senior centers are the places where people build friendships, stay fit and get the information they need about health care, benefits and other vital services.
"I am proud that we have provided $25 million for our 335 centers allowing them to continue serving 13 million hot meals a year to more than 38,000 New Yorkers everyday in senior centers and more than 12,400 meals to homebound seniors."
Commissioner Herbert Stupp noted, "We are pleased that every day 140 Staten Island seniors will be able to enjoy the companionship of friends, nutritious meals and a wealth of activities in this spacious, modern center."
The new Mt. Loretto Senior Center is located on the former site of the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin Children's Orphanage. It is a merger between Pleasant Plain Senior Center and Tottenville Senior Center. The combined efforts of the Department for the Aging, the Borough President's office and Councilman Fossella resulted in physical improvements for the center and the acquisition of a mini-bus and a full time driver. The new center features an arts and crafts center, a brand new cafeteria, a pool room and facilities for other activities.
