MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS PROCLAMATION AT THE NEW YORK CARES '97 KICKOFF VOLUNTEER RALLY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed October 18, 1997 as New York Cares Day to kick off the sixth New York Cares '97 volunteer rally in Manhattan's Bryant Park. The Mayor was joined by Kathleen Behrens, Executive Director of New York Cares, and thousands of volunteers who spent the rest of the day working at 106 public schools in the five boroughs, organizing libraries, installing and wiring computers, creating gardens, designing murals, making fences, painting and fixing-up hallways and classrooms.

"Thanks to these volunteers' generous donations of time, expertise and compassion, the lives of thousands of New Yorkers are richer each day," Mayor Giuliani said. "New York Cares 24,000-member volunteer corps provide tutoring for children, meals for the hungry, companion for the elderly, care for people with HIV/AIDS, and a myriad of community services that improve the quality of life in their communities. On behalf of New York City, I want to commend all of you and to express my deepest gratitude for your invaluable work, great heart and constant enthusiasm."

Ms. Behrens said, "This is a wonderful day for New York City. Today, New Yorkers are showing how much they care and how much they can accomplish as a team. The cooperation we have had from the Mayor's Office, the Board of Education, principals, parents, teachers, students, and New York City corporations has made this massive effort a success. But the real reward is on the faces of the children when they come to school and see what the volunteers have done for them."

New York Cares is now used as a model of community service in more than 30 cities nationwide.
