MAYOR GIULIANI SAMPLES SOME OF NEW YORK'S "BEST" DELI TO CELEBRATE BEN'S BEST 50TH ANNIVERSARY

10¢ Knish, 60¢ Hot Pastrami, and 5¢ Dr. Brown Celery Tonic Are On The Menu As Prices Are Rolled Back For Anniversary Celebration

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today stepped back in time and sampled some of "Ben's Best Gourmet Kosher Deli" at original 1947 prices to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the landmark Rego Park establishment. In honor of the occasion, the Mayor declared today Ben's Best 50th Anniversary Day in New York City.

"Ben's Best has been a New York institution for half a century," Mayor Giuliani proclaimed. "This family-owned business has become a cornerstone of the Rego Park community. And you need only taste their hot pastrami, knishes, world-renown matzoh ball soup, or bagel with a smear to understand why. Today, for one day only, New Yorkers can enjoy an extraordinary treat -- the chance to taste these delicacies at 1947 prices.

"For 50 years, beginning with Ben and Ruth Parker, and continuing today with their son Jay, Ben's Best has developed a loyal clientele, with some original customers traveling from as far as Florida to enjoy deli specialties. But, beyond the culinary delights, the Parker family has been a good friend to New York City -- donating a horse, aptly named "Ben's Best" to the NYPD Mounted Unit, a police car and bicycle to the 112th precinct, supporting the Long Island Harvest and hosting parties for children stricken with cancer. For all these reasons, I am proud to declare today, October 13th Ben's Best 50th Anniversary Day in the City of New York," the Mayor concluded.

Joining the Mayor for this anniversary celebration were Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, State Senator Serphin Maltese, City Council Members Al Stabile and Tom Ognibene, New York State Assembly Members Nettie Meyerson and Tony Seminerio, and many other distinguished elected officials, members of the community and loyal customers.
