MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES 53RD ANNUAL COLUMBUS DAY PARADE

Honors Contributions Of Italian Immigrants To New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani proclaimed today, Monday October 13th Columbus Parade Day in honor of the 53rd annual New York City Columbus Day Parade. Joining the Mayor at the Gracie Mansion breakfast were Parade Grand Marshall, actor Paul Sorvino, City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, local elected officials, parade sponsors and prominent members of New York's Italian American community.

"On Columbus Day, New York City comes alive as a million spectators line Fifth Avenue in celebration of the discovery of America. Yet over the years, this great day has come to symbolize much more," said Mayor Giuliani. "As the theme of this year's parade so aptly captures, it is also a celebration of the important contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to our great City -- a tradition which has passed from generation to generation.

"New Yorkers of Italian descent have made their rich cultural heritage, their strong family values and, not to mention, their love of fine foods, integral to the fabric of our City. In recognition of these important contributions and in honor of the discovery of America, I am proud to proclaim today Columbus Parade Day in New York City," the Mayor concluded.

Through the years, the parade's sponsor, the Columbus Citizen's Foundation, has contributed more than $5 million in scholarships, grants and other gifts to charitable organizations and worthy causes.
