MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "WALK TO CURE DIABETES DAY"

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani proclaimed today Juvenile Diabetes: Walk to Cure Diabetes Day in New York City at the annual 12 kilometer walk-a-thon that began at Battery Bark in lower Manhattan. The Mayor was joined by the Walk's co-chairs Richard Parsons, President of Time Warner, Charles Peeler, President of Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt, actress Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Obernier, the President of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and thousands of enthusiastic walkers.

"This twelve kilometer Walk for the Cure is a way for thousands of New Yorkers to pitch in and help combat diabetes. Sixteen million Americans have diabetes and some 650,000 new cases are diagnosed each year," Mayor Giuliani said. "I congratulate all of today's walkers and event sponsors, and hope that one day their efforts, and the efforts of so many concerned medical and research professionals, are rewarded with the discovery of a cure."

Since 1970, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation has funded almost $300 million in diabetes research. Companies, such as Paine Webber, the national sponsor of the walk, have helped make possible today's walk, and similar events in 142 sites around the world.

Today's eighth annual Walk offered a day of fun, food and entertainment for a worthy cause. The walk started at Battery Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony and proceeded through City Hall Plaza, crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, and returned to Battery Park.

Diabetes affects over 16 million Americans and more than 100 million people world-wide. Heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, loss of limbs and nerve damage are complications associated with diabetes.
