MAYOR GIULIANI DELIVERS PROCLAMATION HONORING
KPMG PEAT MARWICK ON ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY
Company Commemorates Anniversary With "World of Spirit Day"
Employees Devote Day To Citywide Community Service Activities
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani issued a proclamation declaring today "KPMG Peat Marwick Centennial Day" in honor of the company's 100th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the public accounting firm has designated today "World of Spirit Day" and will send its employees to more than 1,000 communities throughout the nation to perform community service activities.
"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I commend KPMG Peat Marwick and its 2,000 New York City employees for devoting a day to community service in the City's parks, schools, hospitals and many diverse communities," said Mayor Giuliani. "KPMG's decision to celebrate its centennial with a day of community service is a great example of corporate citizenship."
More than 2,000 KPMG employees will volunteer their time throughout the City by providing career guidance at City high schools, volunteering at hospitals, consulting with minority and small business owners, and cleaning Central Park.
"The occasion of our Centennial provides a unique opportunity to reflect on our beginnings, who we are today, and where we are going," said Joseph T. Boyle, KPMG's managing partner for the Northeast area. "We have built a firm known for its determination, vision, ingenuity and commitment to excellence. We can't think of a better way to celebrate 100 years of doing business than to give back to the communities that have helped sustain us."
Nationwide, KPMG employees will volunteer more than 160,000 hours -- a commitment valued at more than $20 million including billable time, salaries and expenses for all service projects.
KPMG Peat Marwick was founded on August 2, 1897 by Scotsmen James Marwick and Roger Mitchell who opened an office at 45 Nassau Street. Today the company employs more than 78,000 people in 153 countries around the world.
