MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "GERMAN AMERICAN FRIENDSHIP WEEK"
Salutes 40th Anniversary of the Steuben Day Parade
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed German American Friendship Week at a Gracie Mansion reception commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Steuben Day Parade and the significant contributions German Americans make to the City of New York. Joining the Mayor were Herb Stupp, Commissioner for the Department of the Aging and Thomas Von Essen, Commissioner for the New York City Fire Department. The proclamation was presented to William Hetzler, Chairman of the Steuben Parade Committee.
"It is an honor to welcome you to Gracie Mansion again this year to launch the beginning of the German American Friendship Week," Mayor Giuliani said.
"This celebration reminds us all of the valuable role that German Americans have played in the historical and cultural development of New York City and America as a whole.
"German Americans came to New York City eager to achieve. Through hard work, they built businesses, established communities and created environments in which their culture could thrive. From these communities they were able to reach out to the neighbors around them and enrich New York City by sharing their culture. It is the same process of immigration that has made New York so successful generation after generation.
"New York is proud to be the center of German American culture and to be home to so many accomplished German Americans, among them Commissioners Stupp and Von Essen. They serve as role models and exemplify the strong relationship that exists between the German American community and New York City," noted Mayor Giuliani.
The 40th German American Steuben Day Parade will be held on Saturday, September 20th, along Fifth Avenue with Mayor Giuliani as Grand Marshall.
The Parade is named for Baron Frederick Wilhem von Steuben who came to America as a volunteer, offering his services to General George Washington. General von Steuben personally drilled the troops, instilling in them inspiration, confidence and competence that was an important factor in achieving victory in the Revolutionary War.
