MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY TO DESIGNATE COLUMBIA PRESBYTERIAN'S BABIES AND CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AS A TRAUMA CENTER

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today helped cut the ribbon to officially open the Columbia Presbyterian's Babies and Children's Hospital as a 911 Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. The designation, which recognizes the Pediatric Trauma Center as one with the highest level of care for children who are acutely ill or victims of serious sudden injury, was granted by the State's Department of Health upon a review, audit and recommendation of New York City's Fire Department and its Emergency Medical Services Bureau.

The Mayor joined William Speck, MD, President of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital; Caryn Schwab, Executive Director of the Babies and Children Hospital; Dr. Steven Stylianos, Director of the Pediatric Program at Columbia Presbyterian; and Pediatric Trauma Center former patients and their parents for the inaugural ceremony.

"Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for children and youngsters between the ages of one and 19 nationwide," said Mayor Giuliani. "Thanks to the quality care that Columbia Presbyterian's Babies and Children's Hospital provides, many of those young lives are saved in New York City.

"I want to congratulate Columbia Presbyterian's Babies and Children's Hospital for the state of the art facilities and superb team of skilled medical professionals that have made it a health care leader around the country. Its designation as a Level One facility is the last of a long list of achievements that the Babies and Children's Hospital has well earned for the past 30 years of excellent service to our City."

Dr. Speck said, "Babies and Children's Hospital shares Mayor Giuliani's strong commitment to excellence in health care and to the prevention of traumatic injuries to young people. However, when life-threatening injuries do occur, effective treatment must be sought immediately. Our new "Level One" pediatric trauma center at Babies and Children's Hospital is ready 24 hours a day to provide the very best treatment to young trauma patients. The young patients who are with us today inspire us with their courage, and at the same time provide heartening examples of great things that can be accomplished in the treatment of pediatric trauma."

Among other renowned Pediatric departments at the Babies and Children's Hospital are the Sol Goldman Children's Heart Center, the Cystic Fibrosis Center of the Pediatric Pulmonary Division, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
