MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE
WEEK IN NEW YORK CITY
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today commemorated the 187th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico by proclaiming the week of September 12 -19, 1997 as Mexican Independence Week in New York City. Joining the Mayor at the ceremony at City Hall were Jorge Pinto, Consul General of Mexico; Joel Hern ndez, Deputy Consul General of Mexico; members of the Mexican Cultural Institute, and the Federation of United Mexican Societies.
"Today I have the privilege of joining the Mexican community in New York City in celebrating their Independence Day," said Mayor Giuliani. "New Yorkers of Mexican descent have made vital cultural, social and economic contributions to the City and, in doing so, they have shown the same courage and determination that their independence heroes showed 187 years ago when they undertook the fight for freedom and a better life for their country.
"I thank the Mexican community for those contributions and for allowing me to share their joy in honoring their national heroes and cheering "Viva Mexico" in remembrance of Mexico's glorious Independence Day."
Mexico's Independence Day on September 15 is celebrated with the traditional ceremony of "El Grito," a reenactment of Miguel Hidalgo's call for arms in 1810, which marked the beginning of the colony's struggle for independence from Spain.
