STATEMENT REGARDING THE DEATH OF MOTHER TERESA

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani issued the following statement regarding the death of Mother Teresa:

"It is with deep sadness and regret that I learned of Mother Teresa's passing earlier today in Calcutta, India.

Mother Teresa was a saint, a person who devoted her life to helping people in need. She and her Missionaries of Charity did a tremendous amount of work in New York City, caring for people with AIDS and helping children. Every day, she worked on behalf of those who were in the worst of circumstances, -- and she did it with generosity, kindness and above all else, with love. Mother Teresa, who I had the honor of meeting twice, most recently again this past June, was a wonderful person with a terrific sense of humor. She knew how to make people laugh and she knew how to charm everyone. And if she asked you for something, you did it without hesitation, because you knew she was doing God's work.

I have with me today a small medal that Mother Teresa gave me the last time I saw her, which she blessed. I ask that we all - for a few moments - share a silent prayer in tribute to a saint and pray to her."
