MAYOR GIULIANI KICKS OFF THE 1997-98 BROADWAY SEASON AT
SIXTH ANNUAL BROADWAY ON BROADWAY CONCERT
More Than 200 Performers From 23 Broadway Shows
Give Free Outdoor Concert In Times Square
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today kicked off this year's Broadway season at the sixth annual Broadway on Broadway concert. The concert was held on an open-air stage in Times Square, at 43rd Street and Broadway.
The Mayor was joined by Jed Bernstein, Executive Director of the League of American Theaters and Producers, Gretchen Dykstra, President of the Times Square Business Improvement District, and more than 200 performers, including: Brittny Kissinger, Annie; Fredi Walker, Rent; Marilu Henner, Chicago; Sarah Uriate Berry, Les Miserables; Rub‚n Blades, Robert Cuccioli, and Deborah Gibson.
"I am delighted to be here today enjoying this extraordinary display of talent at the Broadway on Broadway concert," said Mayor Giuliani. "Our 1996-1997 Broadway season the most popular season to date and the forecast for this year is just as encouraging. This is truly a fantastic way to celebrate the beginning of a new Broadway season and, most importantly, a revitalized Times Square."
Jed Bernstein, Executive Director of the League of American Theaters and Producers, said, "Once again New York's diverse theater community has joined forces to create one of the City's most widely anticipated public events to launch the new season. Today, more than 10 million people attend Broadway shows each year in New York, and Broadway on Broadway gives the public the unique opportunity to sample the best of current Broadway shows and sneak previews of shows yet to open, all absolutely free."
