MAYOR GIULIANI CONGRATULATES THE NEW YORK LIBERTY FOR GROUND-BREAKING INAUGURAL SEASON

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today congratulated the New York Liberty for their trailblazing inaugural season and second place finish in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Mayor presented the Liberty team members with a proclamation declaring today "New York Liberty Day" in New York City.

"Everyone knows that New York City is the basketball capital of the world," Mayor Giuliani said. "It is only fitting that New York City is home to one of the eight teams of this historic WNBA inaugural season, and even more fitting that our team should be one of the best. Having finished the season with one of the best records in the league and an average attendance of well over 13,000 per game, the New York Liberty have been a tremendous addition to our City's already impressive roster of professional sports teams."

"But more importantly, Coach Nancy Darsch, Rebecca Lobo, Teresa Weatherspoon and all of the Liberty players have been excellent role models for young New Yorkers and an inspiration to us all. Last Thursday's semifinal win over the Phoenix Mercury was a terrific display of the skill, teamwork, and heart that brought tens of thousands of New Yorkers to Madison Square Garden throughout the summer to watch the Liberty make history. Next year, I look forward to inviting the Liberty back to City Hall as WNBA Champions," the Mayor conclude

Under the leadership of head coach Nancy Darsch and general manager Carol Blazejowski, the New York Liberty finished the WNBA regular season in second place with a record of 17 wins and 11 losses. The Liberty defeated the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA semifinal game to earn a trip to the Championship game, which they lost to the Houston Comets 65-51.

Although they lost the championship game, the Liberty and their fans enjoyed a highly successful first season. Liberty guard Teresa Weatherspoon was named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. Weatherspoon and center Rebecca Lobo were also selected to the first All-WNBA Second Team.
