Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today welcomed award-winning country music singer Garth Brooks to New York City at a City Hall press conference. Joining the Mayor and Garth Brooks were Jeff Bewkes, Chairman and CEO of HBO, and New York City Parks Commissioner Henry Stern.
The Mayor presented Garth Brooks with a Crystal Apple and a proclamation declaring Thursday, August 7, Garth Brooks Day in New York City, the date of his 8 pm concert in Central Park's North Meadow.
"A Central Park Concert is reserved only for the great ones, a requirement unquestionably met by Garth Brooks," said Mayor Giuliani. "He is the Great Country Rocker, the biggest selling American solo artist of all time, and the recipient of every award the recording industry can bestow.
"But bigger than his ratings is Garth Brooks' heart," continued the Mayor. "Despite his enormous fame, he has remained accessible to his fans and inspired tolerance and brotherhood through the message of his music.
"It is a great honor to welcome him to New York City -- the Music and Entertainment Capital of the World. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are anxiously awaiting this great concert in Central Park, as are millions of country music lovers around the world, who will be watching the concert live on HBO. I'm sure that this will be a memorable event for the entire City," concluded the Mayor.
Other stars who have performed in Central Park include Paul Simon, Diana Ross, Luciano Pavarotti, Barbara Streisand, James Taylor, Plácido Domingo, Linda Ronstadt and Gloria Estefan.
The Mayor thanked Da Nico Restaurant for their generous support of today's press conference.
