Acknowledging the vital contributions of Hispanic women to the City of New York, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today addressed the 100 Hispanic Women's Annual Breakfast at Tavern On-The-Green in Central Park. The Mayor commended the organization for fostering the advancement of Hispanic women through legislation, public policy and professional development. The Mayor was joined by Sila Calderon, the Mayor of San Juan, who delivered the keynote speech.
"Groups like One Hundred Hispanic Women are critical to New York because they work hand-in-hand with government and communities to improve the quality of life in this City," Mayor Giuliani said. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I thank the organization's president, Shirley Rodriguez Remenesky, and the members of the board of directors for investing their hard work, time and resources to make our City a better place.
"I'd also like to salute the achievements of the Honorable Sila Calderon, Mayor of San Juan, who has had an outstanding career and serves as an example of leadership for all Latinas," the Mayor added.
Ms. Remeneski noted, "As we celebrate our second anniversary, we rededicate ourselves to our objectives to ensure that as leaders, we gain the knowledge and power to make choices for ourselves and obtain better representation in government and in the private sector."
During her prominent career, Mayor Calderon has received numerous distinctions including the Distinguished Woman of the Year Award conferred by the Puerto Rico Products Association in 1986, Leader of the Year Award from the Puerto Rico Chapter of the American Association of Public Works and the Order of Queen Elizabeth by the Spanish government in 1987.
Since it was established two years ago, 100 Hispanic Women has worked to build a forum for Latino women to unite and develop strategies that can help them attain their full potential. Its goal is to bring together a diverse group of dedicated Hispanic women who have demonstrated leadership to work toward empowerment.
