MAYOR GIULIANI JOINS PHOENIX HOUSE IN CELEBRATING ITS 3OTH ANNIVERSARY

Proclaims April 1st Phoenix House Day In New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani helped Phoenix House to celebrate its 30th anniversary as a provider of treatment, education and prevention of drug addiction at a reception tonight at the Tavern On The Green restaurant in Manhattan. In honor of the anniversary, the Mayor proclaimed April 1, 1997 as Phoenix House Day in New York City.

Mayor Giuliani was joined by Phoenix House Founder and President Dr. Mitchell Rosenthal, and Chairman Charles A. Heimbold, Jr.

"New Yorkers are some of the most caring and compassionate people in the world and the outstanding staff of Phoenix House proves this to be true," said Mayor Giuliani. "Among its many contributions to the health and well-being of New Yorkers, Phoenix House provides the kind of treatment that returns substance abusers to society, not only with new values and attitudes, but with the educational and vocational skills needed to build new and productive lives.

"As Mayor, I'd like to congratulate Phoenix House for providing three decades of kindness, caring and compassion to New Yorkers in need and I thank Dr. Rosenthal for all of his hard work and dedication in making Phoenix House one of the foremost substance abuse treatment facilities in the country," the Mayor concluded.

In cooperation with New York City's Board of Education, Phoenix House operates the Phoenix Academy Residential High School, and the Step One Day School. This fall Phoenix House will open a new Second Opportunity school.

The Phoenix House program began in 1967 in Manhattan with six heroin addicts who had undergone detoxification and were determined to remain drug-free. Since then, it has treated close to 70,000 people and developed a new form of treatment without the use of substitute chemicals or drugs.

Currently, the Phoenix House operates treatment programs in New York, New Jersey, California, and Texas, including five residential high schools for teenagers, parenting education and family therapy centers.
