MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI VISITS P.S. 27 AND BRINGS COMPUTER SYSTEM TO STUDENTS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today visited P.S. 27 in Brooklyn and presented a computer, monitor and printer to a classroom of second grade special education students. Responding to the letters written by the students, the Mayor delivered the system which was donated by Oppenheimer & Co., Inc.

"I'm delighted to present this computer system to the children of P.S. 27," said Mayor Giuliani. "For New York City to remain the Capital of the World, it is essential that our children have the proper tools to guide them into the 21st century. Integrating technology in the classroom can greatly enhance student performance by strengthening academic skills, deepening critical and creative thinking and facilitating problem-solving and cooperative learning. And I would like to thank Oppenheimer & Co. for their commitment to the children of New York City exemplified by the donation of this computer system."

In his State of the City address the Mayor said it was his goal to enhance the City's educational curriculum through integration of technology in the classroom. In partnership with the Board of Education, the City Council and the private sector, the Mayor wants to ensure that all public school children have access to a computer by the year 2000. A team with members from each of the partners has already been assembled and diligently working since the announcement of Project Smart Schools.
