MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS MOTION PICTURE CLUB'S
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
TO SYLVESTER STALLONE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today presented the Motion Picture Club's Lifetime Achievement award to native New Yorker Sylvester Stallone for his achievements in acting, writing, producing and directing over a long and illustrious career.

"I am pleased to present this year's Lifetime Achievement Awards to someone who truly exemplifies the spirit of New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "Sylvester Stallone was born in New York, began his career in New York and throughout his career has continued to contribute tremendously to New York. His supportive efforts have helped secure City's reputation as the creative capital of the world."

"Mr. Stallone is one of the biggest box-office stars in history with over thirty film credits to his name -- from Cliffhanger to The Demolition Man to Tango & Cash to Staying Alive, he has more hit movies than can be mentioned," the Mayor continued. "He has given us characters like 'Rocky' and 'Rambo' that have transcended movies and have actually become part of the national psyche. Filmgoers around the world are continuously entertained by his incredible talent."

"Since its founding 57 years ago, the Motion Picture Club has played an important role in the development of New York City's film community," said Mayor Giuliani. "The Club has fostered a sense of camaraderie among our City's motion picture professionals as well as making substantial contributions through fund raising to the lives of less fortunate children throughout the City," he concluded.

Mr. Stallone was born in New York and did his early acting and writing efforts here. Throughout his career, many of Mr. Stallone's movies were filmed in New York including his earliest and latest efforts, The Lords of Flatbush and Copland, respectively, and other projects like Nighthawks, Daylight and his directorial debut, Paradise Alley.

Mr. Stallone also is a co-owner of Planet Hollywood, one of New York City's biggest attractions.

The Motion Picture Club is a group of over 350 film distributors, exhibitors and advertisers who joined together 57 years ago as a professional association which raises funds for film industry-related charities.

New York City's television and film industry is at an all-time high. In 1995, dollars generated by film and television production direct production expenditures rose to $2 billion and a record 175 feature films shot here. Early indications for 1996 look even better, with a record number of feature films shot here during the last 10 months.

Other industry professionals who received awards from the Motion Picture Club this afternoon included actress Whoopi Goldberg, director Mike Nichols, actor Jeremy Northam and actress Lela Rochon.
