MAYOR GIULIANI DEDICATES NEW TRAFFIC LIGHT IN BROOKLYN

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today unveiled a new traffic light at the corner of 18th Avenue and 49th Street in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn. The Mayor was joined at the installation ceremony by Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Councilman Noach Dear, Transportation Commissioner Christopher Lynn, Community Assistance Unit Commissioner Rosemarie O'Keefe and New York Police Department Captain Donald O'Donnell of the 66th Precinct.

"Borough Park had been trying to get a traffic signal at this intersection for 25 years," said Mayor Giuliani. "When I heard that, there was no question what had to be done. With Commissioner Lynn and Commissioner O'Keefe in the lead, we cut the red tape so we could get this light installed. Instead of finding reasons why things can not be done, this administration finds ways to get the job done."

"This light represents a unique solution to a unique problem," the Mayor added. "The problem on 18th Avenue was that there were not enough gaps in traffic for pedestrians to cross safely. This light creates those gaps and will allow pedestrians and drivers to get where they're going safely."

The Mayor publicly thanked Assemblyman Hikind, Councilman Dear, Rabbi Aaron Twerski and members of the "Hatzolah," who worked so hard to get the light installed.

New York City has over 18,000 miles of roadways and more than 10,000 intersections with traffic signals.
