MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS ECOFEST DAY
Serves as Honorary Chairman of Event

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed Sunday, October 6th as Ecofest Day in the City of New York, in honor of the eighth annual Ecofest environmental festival in Riverside Park. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Nanci Callahan, the producer of Ecofest and also the Managing Director of the West Side Cultural Center which sponsors the celebration each year.

The Mayor also presented award certificates to the winner and runner-up of the annual Ecofest poster design contest held in New York City's school districts. He congratulated the winner, fifth grade student Angela K. Hom from P.S. 123 in Bayside, Queens, and runner-up, Kaitlin Lucke, a kindergarten student at P.S. 205 also in Bayside, for their creative designs and concern about the environment.

"Over the years, Ecofest has grown into the largest and most popular environmental event on the East Coast," said Mayor Giuliani. "Ecofest offers a wide variety of information, entertainment and environment-friendly products. With Ecofest, we, as New Yorkers, reaffirm our commitment to a cleaner, safer and healthier environment."

"One of the highest priorities of my administration is the quality of life in New York City -- a better environment is not only an ecological issue, but a quality of life issue, as well," he concluded.

Also at the event was David McCourt from R.C.N. / Starpass which sponsored the poster contest along with the International Paper Company.

Dancer Tyrik Winston from the hit show "Riverdance" provided entertainment at the City Hall proclamation ceremony.
