The Mayor was joined at the reception by Allan Steinfeld, President of the New York Road Runners Club; Parks Commissioner Henry Stern and Arlene Weltman, Executive Director of the New York City Sports Commission.
"For over a quarter century, the City has hosted this world renowned event with outstanding success," said mayor Giuliani. "The New York City Marathon attracts the best athletes from over 100 countries throughout the world and is the world's largest spectator event."
"The success and popularity of this wonderful event is a tribute to Fred Lebow -- the man whose vision and determination made the New York City Marathon into the great tradition that it is today," he added.
Each year, the race begins on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island and runs through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, ending in Manhattan at Central Park's Tavern on the Green. The Marathon is organized and conducted by the New York Road Runners Club, Incorporated. Sponsors include such companies as NIKE, Runner's World, Chase Manhattan Bank, Seiko, Tiffany & Co., PowerBar and Poland Spring and Dunkin Donuts.
