MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS 1996 RADIO-MERCURY AWARD
Gun Control Announcement Wins Top Public Service Announcement Award

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight presented the 1996 Voice of Hope Award to EZ Communications honoring its gun control public service announcement at the 1996 Radio-Mercury Awards at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The Mayor was joined by the First Lady of New York Donna Hanover Giuliani, radio and television personality Dick Clark, CBS News anchorman Dan Rather and Nicholas Verbitsky, president of United Stations Radio Network.

“The radio and advertising industries are important parts of New York’s economy and our national image, but more than that, they are an integral part of the lives of millions of New Yorkers,” said Mayor Giuliani. “While advertising and radio are both important industries, which educate and amuse millions, there is no better example of the positive power of these two forms of communication than when they team up to promote a message of public service. It is a real pleasure to be here tonight to honor EZ Communications and its public service announcement that promotes getting guns off the street.”

The $200,000 Radio-Mercury Awards honor the radio and advertising industry people who create the year’s best advertising. This annual event, staged in New York since its inception in 1992, has publicized and promoted New York by attracting out-of-town advertising and radio executives.

This year’s Voice of Hope public service spot was produced by EZ Communications’ Philadelphia station “Power 99” FM. Accepting the award for EZ Communication was Yolanda Erwin, the narrator of the winning commercial. The announcement addresses gun violence and promotes getting these weapons off the street.
