MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING DEADLINE FOR WAIVERS OF DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS FEES RELATING TO HURRICANE SANDY REPAIRS

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The third bill before me today is Introductory Number 1057, sponsored in conjunction with our Administration by Council Members Dilan, Barron, Chin, Comrie, Gennaro, Jackson, James, Koo, Lander, Nelson, Rose, Vallone, Vann, Williams and Ulrich.

“To aid communities in their recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy, and encourage the repair and reconstruction of buildings damaged by the storm, Local Law 4 of 2013 waived application, permit and inspection fees for work related to plumbing and electrical systems damaged by Hurricane Sandy, as long as the initial application for such work was submitted on or before April 30, 2013.  This measure codified an Executive Order issued by me soon after Hurricane Sandy.

“Since the end of the fee waiver period, the Buildings Department has continued to receive a significant number of applications for permits and construction document approval from property owners whose electrical and plumbing systems were damaged by Sandy.

“Introductory Number 1057 recognizes that the City is still recovering from the property damage caused by Sandy and there is a continued need to alleviate some of the financial impact related to electrical and plumbing repairs undertaken by homeowners. This bill will extend the waiver of Buildings Department fees related to such work until December 31, 2013.

“I would like to thank Department of Buildings Commissioner Robert Limandri and his staff for their work on this bill along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs. I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation.”
